Rabbits are known for their charming ways of expressing affection, often in surprising forms. From playful binkying to gentle nudges, these behaviors are essential for rabbit owners to recognize and appreciate.

A few specific behaviours worth knowing: “binkying” — a joyful jump and mid-air twist — is one of the clearest signs of a genuinely happy rabbit, while flopping fully over onto their side is a sign they feel safe enough to fully relax in their environment. Circling around your feet is often a sign of excitement or affection (and in unneutered rabbits, can also relate to hormonal behaviour), while gentle nudging with the nose is usually a request for attention or petting.

“Chinning” — rubbing their chin against objects, furniture or even you — is a rabbit marking their territory with scent glands under the chin, which, while not affection exactly, is a sign they consider you and your home part of their space.
