Guinea Pig Care Guide: Diet, Hay & Vitamin C Essentials

Guinea pigs share a lot of dietary needs with rabbits, but with one important difference: they can’t produce their own vitamin C and need it from their diet. Here’s a practical guide to what we stock for guinea pig care.

Diet: hay comes first

As with rabbits, hay should make up the bulk of a guinea pig’s daily diet. See our full Timothy Hay guide for how the different cuttings compare, or go straight to the full hay range — our 1st, 2nd and 3rd cutting Timothy, Orchard Hay and Oat Hay are all suitable for guinea pigs.

Vitamin C matters more for guinea pigs

Unlike rabbits and many other small pets, guinea pigs can’t synthesise their own vitamin C and need a reliable dietary source. Our Vitamin C Herb Support is formulated with this in mind, blending timothy hay with parsley, dandelion and nettle.

Treats and everyday wellness

Our Healthy Snackers (apple, pumpkin, pear & blueberry, carrot & pineapple, banana) are all suitable for guinea pigs and made from real fruit with no added sugar or salt. Alongside Vitamin C support, the Select Care range includes several other options worth knowing about — Joint & Mobility Support, Digestive Health Support, Urinary Health Support, Multi-Vitamin Health Support, and Calming Support — all formulated as an addition to a proper hay-based diet, not a substitute for veterinary care.

Foraging and variety

Guinea pigs enjoy foraging just as much as rabbits do. Our Dandelion Forage Tray and Flower Forage Tray are both suitable, as are our herbal blends — Zen Tranquility, Young at Heart, and Vita-Licious — which add daily diet variety for adult guinea pigs.
