Chinchillas have more restrictive dietary needs than rabbits or guinea pigs, so it’s worth knowing exactly which of our products are actually formulated with them in mind. Here’s what we recommend, and what we don’t.
Diet: hay first, always
Hay is even more central to a chinchilla’s diet than it is for rabbits or guinea pigs. See our full Timothy Hay guide for how the cuttings compare — our 1st, 2nd and 3rd cutting Timothy, Orchard Hay and Oat Hay are all suitable for chinchillas, and Premium Ultra-Soft Timothy Hay is worth trying too.
Treats, carefully
Our Healthy Snackers range is suitable for chinchillas and made from real fruit with no added sugar or salt — a good option for the occasional treat.
What we don’t recommend for chinchillas
Chinchillas have more restrictive nutritional needs than rabbits and guinea pigs, so not everything in our range is suitable for them. Our herbal blends — Zen Tranquility, Young at Heart, and Vita-Licious — are formulated for adult rabbits and guinea pigs and are specifically not recommended for chinchillas. If you’re after enrichment for a chinchilla, stick to hay-based variety (rotating between Timothy cuttings, Orchard and Oat hay) rather than the herbal blends.
